Daughter pilots mom’s last flight as 38-yr veteran air hostess

Nov 6, 2018

One proud mother and now a former air hostess with Air India has fulfilled her dream to work on board her last flight piloted by her daughter before she retires.

July 31 marked Pooja Chinchankar’s last and most memorable shift with Air India. After 38 years with the airliner, the senior flight attendant says it was altogether a “wonderful experience,” reports the Hindustan Times.

As Captain Paresh Nerurkar made the announcement to all passengers on board the Mumbai-bound flight that morning, the 58-year-old flight attendant walked down the aisle one last time, this time to applause.

Best of all was the fact that her daughter, Ashrrita Chinchankar, co-piloted that very Airbus A-319 to fulfill the proud mother’s wish, scheduled with the help of airline management at Ashrrita’s request.

“It was my mom’s dream to have me pilot her last flight,” tweeted Ashrrita.

When passengers disembarked the aircraft, both mother and daughter stood side by side at the doorway, with many people passing on their well wishes, and commenting on how alike the two look.

Air India later tweeted: “Our heartfelt wishes to your mother and you for this special flight when she passes the baton on to you to have the privilege of serving our passengers with dedication. The legacy lives on.”

Ashrrita, formally a mass media student, has been with Air India since 2016. Her mother joined the carrier in December 1980.

Speaking of her daughter, Pooja said she “wished to see her as a pilot,” which prompted Ashrrita to obtain her commercial pilot licence in Canada, which later led her to becoming a pilot with Air India.

As the two have worked together over the past couple of years, Ashrrita recalls fondly of how her mother would refer to her as “Captain” when entering the cockpit, “which always sounded strange,” she joked, reports The Times of India.

Even though Pooja always knew what her daughter liked, she would always ask if she’d like any tea or coffee—with or without sugar.

“I will miss that voice on the flight deck,” Ashrrita recalls fondly.

Now that Pooja’s wish has come true, with not only Ashrrita becoming a pilot, but also having co-piloted Pooja’s last flight prior to retirement, she’s sure to recall with fondness her working career, which ended on such a positive note.
