Dog lived her life on chain, gets rescued and finally some love for first time .
A pit bull was subjected to the most unfortunate fate by being tied up with a short metal chain that hung from above and around her neck so tightly she couldn’t put her head down. Thank heavens she was rescued, but her road to recovery was a long one.
Cala’s owner was a mechanic in San Jose, Costa Rica. She was kept as a guard dog, but was subjected to cruel abuse. The metal chain around her neck was wrapped so tight she could barely breathe and was unable to ever rest her head.
As a result of being underfed, Cala’s health deteriorated as well. Her owner didn’t care about her well-being and never bothered to take her to the vet even when she was ill.
Neighbors took notice of the appalling state Cala was in. They called the police and the animal shelter Territorio de Zaguates to help rescue the dog.
The rescuers came in the nick of time as Cala was very ill physically and emotionally.
Founder of Territorio de Zaguates Lya Battle told The Dodo, “The picture I first saw of her showed a pitiful creature robbed of its dignity and ready to give up—a dog whose spirit had been broken and was just waiting for the end to come while living a never-ending nightmare.”
While being treated for the wounds on her body, Cala was in agony.
“Nursing her was as painful for her as it was for us, but eventually she understood that after the pain came love and treats, so she learned to deal with it like a champ,” Battle shared.
Tragedy struck Cala again while staying at the center. Assailants fed poisoned sausages to the animals at the shelter, killing 16 dogs, but miraculously Cala survived.
Battle said it was because of Cala’s size and because she was a “tough cookie.”
After the attack, Cala suffered from “neurological problems” as a result of the poison but eventually pulled through.
She is now part of a loving foster family who doesn’t mind her playful ways, and she has adapted to being around other dogs wonderfully.
“After years of neglect, torture, and imprisonment, Cala seems to be getting all the puppy misbehaving process out of her system and we all think that’s just fine. She is happy, strong, willful, a bit stubborn, and spoiled by her foster mom and family,” Battle said.
Although Cala’s story may have started out like a nightmare, her life has now turned a corner and is filled with goodness.
“This rescue is an epic battle of good against bad and of hate against love, and in the end, as it always does, love wins,” shared Battle.
