Elderly father rings son to say he’s getting divorced. The real reason is pure comedy

Words of Wisdom aims to highlight important morals, which we feel our readers will benefit from reading. We hope you enjoy this fable.

Here, we’ve retold a joke that has been circulating online for years. Mom and Dad were obviously missing their kids who don’t regularly visit, so the old man hatched a plan.

One day before New Year, an elderly man in Phoenix called his son in New York to drop a bombshell.

“I hate to ruin your day, but listen, your mother and I are getting a divorce,” he told his son. “45 years of marriage … 45 years of misery is enough!”

Taken aback by the shocking announcement, the son screamed, “Dad, what are you talking about?”

The elderly man explained, “We can’t stand the sight of each other anymore.”

“I’m sick of her face, and I’m sick of talking about this. So, call your sister in Chicago and tell her!” he burst out, before hanging up the phone.

The son was frantic with worry and immediately called his sister to break the news.

“They are not getting divorced if I have anything to do about it,” his sister cried out angrily. “I’ll take care of this.”

She rang her elderly father straight away, yelling: “You are not getting divorced. Don’t do anything until I come back. I’m calling my brother back, and both of us are flying home tomorrow to discuss about this.”

“Until then, don’t file for divorce, don’t do a thing. DO YOU HEAR ME?” she shouted at the top of her voice and hung up.

When the elderly man hung up the phone, he turned to his wife and smiled, “Okay honey, the kids are paying their own airfares and coming home for New Year!”

You may not have seen that coming…

Although this tale was intended just for laughs, sad to say, it’s so true to life. Oftentimes, we are too busy trying to make a living that we neglect our aging parents back home.

No matter how busy you are, be sure to make time for your parents and treat them with loving care. Never take them for granted, because one day, you’ll look back and miss them when they’re no longer around.
