Lady wants to be buried with a fork in hand—her uplifting reason brings pastor to tears
Words of Wisdom aims to highlight important morals, which we feel our readers will benefit from reading. We hope you enjoy this fable.
People are often afraid to die. However, a dying woman remained optimistic until the very end, because she knew “the best is yet to come.” Here we retell this tale of hope, which has been circulating online for years. May this beautiful fable uplift your spirit and bring a smile to your face.
In this uplifting account, a woman—with only three months to live—invited a pastor over to her house to discuss her final wishes.
She told the pastor everything she wanted for her funeral service, including which songs were to be sung, which scriptures were to be read, as well as the dress she’d like to be dressed in.
When all was said, the pastor was preparing to leave. Just then, the woman remembered something important.
The woman told the pastor her last request, “I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand.”
Bewildered, the pastor pondered why she would want that. That’s when she gave him the lesson of a lifetime.
The woman explained that over the years, she attended many potluck dinners at the church. Whenever she finished the main course, someone would come over to clear the plates and say, “Keep your fork.”
That was her favorite part of the meal because she knew something better was coming—such as hazelnut-almond cake, or peanut butter fudge pie.
Thus, to her, “keep your fork” always meant that “something better was coming.”
She knew she wouldn’t live long, but deep down in her heart, she believed something better was coming. And this was the message she wanted to pass on to the mourners at her funeral.
When the mourners asked, “What’s up with the fork in her hand?” She wanted the pastor to tell them, “Keep your fork. The best is yet to come!”
The woman’s words moved the pastor to tears, and they hugged one last time.
At the funeral, the woman was indeed buried with a fork in her right hand. Just as the woman anticipated, when the mourners passed by her casket, they kept asking the pastor, “What’s up with the fork?”
The pastor then shared the reason why during his message. He told the mourners the fork was a symbol of hope to the woman. He said he couldn’t forget the fork and the important lesson behind it, and he thought they wouldn’t forget it too.
The next time you feel like all hope is lost, think about this story and remind yourself that the best is yet to come…
