Restaurateur, who once lived on the street, doles out free meals to the homeless every day

Instead of throwing away leftover food, a restaurateur is making a difference by giving it away to homeless people so that they can sleep “on a full stomach.”

Ashish Sood, hailing from Ludhiana, India, knows how it feels to be homeless and hungry.

He came to Australia to study hospitality and commercial cooking in 2007, and being poor, he once lived “rough” in a park for two weeks.

Now, having fulfilled his dream to become a restaurateur after years of hardship, he is giving back to society by feeding the homeless in his city.

“I know what it takes to survive in this country, so now that I have enough, I want to give it back to those who don’t,” Sood told SBS.

Every night, during closing time at his takeaway Indian cuisine joint Ginger and Garlic, located in CBD Brisbane, Sood’s staff give away leftover food to at least eight to nine homeless people.

“I’m glad that now instead of going into the bin, it [food] makes a lot of people happy and lets them sleep on a full stomach,” Sood said.

In fact, Sood is willing to feed more homeless people in the city.

“I’m doing my best, that’s all I can do for the homeless people,” Sood said in an interview with ABC.

Sood’s good deeds haven’t gone unnoticed by the community, and he has benefited from his incredible generosity. He won the praises of paying customers, and many people patronize his shop after learning about his amazing effort on social media.

“Congratulations this is true humanity with its sleeves rolled up. I hope that many many paying customers patronize this establishment,” one user commented on Facebook.

True enough, it is in giving that we receive!
