Single Thai dad wears a dress on Mother’s Day to ensure his sons don’t feel left out

Growing up with a single parent can be hard for a child, especially when school holds a Mother’s Day or Father’s Day celebration. A single dad in Thailand didn’t want his sons to feel left out on Mother’s Day at school, and decided to take their mother’s place.

Chatchai Parnuthai, from Kanchanaburi, became a single dad to his two young sons after his wife walked out on them three years ago.

The boys’ school holds an annual Mother’s Day celebration, an important Thai tradition, where children get to play games with their mothers.

To ensure that his sons, 5-year-old Ozone and 3-year-old Imsome, didn’t feel left out in the celebration, which recently transpired on Aug. 10, Parnuthai came up with a creative idea—to dress up as a woman.

Parnuthai, a motorbike mechanic, borrowed a dress from his mother and attended the celebration with a flower pinned to his hair.

“I’m a single dad so I just wanted to make sure that my two sons were happy,” he said in a video, uploaded to Viral Press. “I was a bit embarrassed, but it meant that they could take part like their classmates.”

As seen in the photos and video uploaded to Facebook, Parnuthai sat alongside the other mothers while his sons paid their respects to him.

Parnuthai’s actions were praised by other mothers.

One mom, 36-year-old Kornpat Sukhom, said Parnuthai was the “best mother.”

“In Thailand if it’s Mother’s Day, every mother has to join in activities with their children at school,” Sukhom said. “The children’s parents are divorced and the mother is now living in Europe. This is why he showed up to the school wearing a dress to take the place of her in the celebration.”

“He wanted the children not to feel left out because their mother had left them.”

For a motorbike mechanic to don a laced dress is no easy feat, and is a courageous act his sons will surely appreciate and look back on fondly one day.
